Dell EMC Data Domain storage systems provide data backup, archiving, and disaster recovery with high-speed, inline deduplication. They also has a new generation of midsized and large enterprise Data Domain systems powered with a Flash SSD. By consolidating backup and archive data on a Data Domain system, customers can reduce storage requirements by 10-30x, making disk cost-effective for onsite retention and highly efficient for network-based replication to disaster recovery sites. The Data Domain Operating System (DD OS) is the intelligence behind Data Domain systems that makes them one of most reliable and cloud-enabled protection storage.

The integration of Gemalto’s SafeNet KeySecure external key management appliance with Dell’s EMC Data Domain storage systems offers customers a comprehensive key management and data encryption platform providing the following advantages:

    • Single, centralized platform for managing cryptographic content (keys and related data)
    • Simplified management of encryption keys across the entire lifecycle including secure key generation, storage and backup, key distribution, rotation, deactivation and deletion
    • Simplified attainment of government and compliance mandates with efficient, centralized auditing of key management practices
    • Lower total cost of ownership by leveraging a continuously growing list of 3rd party technologies, Gemalto's SafeNet Data Protection Connector family of products and the OASIS KMIP standard

Data-at-Rest Encryption and Key Management with VMAX and KeySecure

    The VMAX and KeySecure integration

    •  Leverages OASIS standard KMIP-based external key management protocol
    •  Features centralized key management and auditing for security compliance objectives
    •  Is a highly-available and resilient environment for long-term key storage external to the VMAX storage platform
    •  Is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 capability using KeySecure with HSMs
    •  Has ability to temporarily decommission VMAX storage platform for secure transport by escrowing keys in

Each VMAX storage platform with the Data-at-Rest Encryption feature can be configured to connect to one or more KeySecure appliances at a customer's data center. It is recommended that at least two KeySecure appliances are configured in a cluster for high-availability. There is no encryption key dependency between VMAX storage platforms, so independent KeySecure appliances/clusters can be configured at each site.

Dell EMC's interoperability validation matrix maintains the most up-to-date list of VMAX-supported versions of Gemalto SafeNet KeySecure.

Dell Compellent Storage: Storage and Archive with SafeNet KeySecure

Dell Compellent is a high-performance, efficient, scalable storage platform based on a modular architecture that unifies block and file. Real-time system information about each data block allows Dell Compellent’s Storage Center to optimize data placement, management, and protection throughout the lifecycle.

Through the use of self-encrypting drives, Dell Compellent ensure that data stored at rest is secure wherever it resides and that it is only available to authorized users.

SafeNet KeySecure from Gemalto integrates with these drives to provide enterprise-scale key management and robust key security in FIPS 140-2 certified hardware.

Dell XC Web-Scale Converged Appliance with SafeNet KeySecure

To store the encryption keys for each self-encrypting drive, SafeNet KeySecure integrates with the Dell XC Web-Scale Converged Appliance using the Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP).

Centralizing management for the entire deployment of SEDs improves security by making key surveillance, rotation, and deletion easier, while also separating duties so that no single administrator is responsible for the entire environment.

Additionally, unifying and centralizing policy management, logging, and auditing makes information more readily accessible which, in turn, makes demonstrating compliance with data governance requirements simple.
